treaty

friends,

episode 521 is posted with awe for (my) songwriting hero leonard cohen. i've been listening to his new release, you want it darker, non-stop since it was released yesterday. i'm quite sincerely gobsmacked.

this week's podcast is about this, mostly. and also the inevitable heartbreak of life, and g-d, and songwriting, generally.

upon searching, it appears that the song "treaty" is not readily available, but you can stream samples at the various online retailers. for an instrumental glimpse, this is the reprise which closes the album (the reprise holds a haunting final verse, which i recommend listening all the way through for).

the song - you want it darker

the song - did i ever love you?

and this is - the album

i hope you'll listen.

love,

russell

episode 520 finds me with three versions of the same song.

each is a bit incomplete, but i hope you'll listen, nonethless.

perfection

friends,

shame aside, i'm happy to present some long-lost unfinished song ideas (along with a new song in-process) on tonight's podcast. it's episode 519.

life is short and long and difficult and good. i'm thankful for all of it.

i hope you'll listen.

love,

russell

old debts

friends,

episode 518 is all about love songs. or, perhaps, not-getting-what-you-want-and-learning-to-make-something-beautiful-of-it songs.

i hope you'll listen.

the 2005 film - brokeback mountain

love,

russell

p.s. - brokeback mountain is admittedly sappy. yes. all the same, i find its expression of inconsolable loss quite moving.

p.p.s. - this scene is an example.
